Chair 840 x 445 x 415Further informationWhen commissioned for an exhibition in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, to seed was made to be site-specific, but in its transfer here, the work too coalesces with its present environment. It sits surrounded by and sheltered within the canopy of kauri trees and is tickled at its feet by tussock, specimens that themselves have been chosen, extracted, and planted here.

The change in environment removes the perceived domesticity of these objects, and as inherently not garden furniture, their intrusion into this outdoor setting exposes the garden itself as an artificial place of botanical and cultural exchange, with seeds having a long history as a currency between nations for transplanting culture. From this perspective, it is appropriate that to seed is positioned here amongst a wider environment of international seed and plant exchange and research.

Fiona Gunn studied Horticulture at the Biological Husbandry Unit in 2011 and was a propagation tutor 2012-2013.
