Oversight continues Bennett’s explorations into global environmental issues through works that consider our past, present, and future relationship with the land, a theme that resonates closely with the work of Lincoln University. Words penned up the six and half metre pole, a former telecommunications pole recycled from Antarctica, were suggested by students and relate to the theme of water and land usage. At the top is a steel figure, designed to rotate in the wind, then below a faux scientific mechanism acts as an environmental clock. Navigational and measuring devices are a recurring motif in Bennett’s works in which he aims to draw attention to humanity’s complacency in the face of warning signs of impending environmental disaster.
