Lincoln University is likely to increase its involvement in international research in the Antarctic, following its participation in a research conference funded by a grant from the University's Fund for Excellence.

Dr Gary Steel, a Lincoln University psychologist, has returned from the biennial meeting of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), held in Tokyo, with a number of proposals for further projects relating to human behaviour.

Lincoln University is the only New Zealand university conducting social science research in the Antarctic. Dr Steel's research has focused on the psychological effects of living in extreme and unusual environments, and how people adapt to these surroundings. His current research relates to mood fluctuations and the incidents that cause moods to change. He is also investigating people's perceptions of the Antarctic before and after their first visit.

Dr Steel is one of six students and five staff members who have shared an allocation of money from the Fund for Excellence, which funds promising research projects.

He attended the Tokyo conference principally as a representative on the international Working Party on Human Biology and Medicine. "There is considerable interest in Lincoln's social science research in the Antarctic and we will be looking into three new opportunities for international research," he says.

"The work on isolation can be applied to a range of fields where people are working in unusual situations, such as military postings and for field work in inhospitable places," says Dr Steel. "It's likely that the research into mood changes will have an even broader application."

Lincoln's Fund for Excellence was the first of its kind established by a New Zealand university, and aims to promote excellence in teaching, research and student services using funds collected in an annual appeal to alumni, University Council members and friends of Lincoln University.
