    About

Captain Duncan Buchanan Macfarlane was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. 0. Macfarlane, of Riccarton. He was educated at. Christ's College, where he was prominent in all athletics. He subsequently came to Lincoln College, where he spent two years, and played in the first fifteen. He went to Egypt with the Rifle Brigade, and was first in action against the Senussi on Christmas Day, 1915. From Egypt he went with the Brigade to France, being in charge of the machine guns, and later of the bombing parties, and also filled a position on the staff. He went through the battle of the Somme, and was promoted to captain about a year ago. He was 24 years of age at the time of his death. Source: Canterbury Agricultural College Magazine, December 1917 p489.
