Dr. Bryan Sykes is author of the best-selling The Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry. In this groundbreaking book, Dr Sykes revelas how the identification of a particular strand of DNA that passes unbroken through the maternal line, allows scientists to trace our genetic makeup all the way back to prehistoric times – to seven primeval women, the “seven daughters of Eve.” Dr Sykes is a professor of genetics at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University and director of www.oxfordancestors.com.
Professor Alison Stewart holds a Personal Chair in Plant Pathology at Lincoln University. Her work focuses on developing biological control systems for soil-borne diseases of fruit and vegetable crops. Alison’s latest initiative has been to establish the National Centre for Advanced Bio-Protection Technologies. As Centre Director, Alison leads this group of key plant protection scientists from various research institutes throughout New Zealand who work together on a range of programmes involving biocontrol, biosecurity and biotechnology research to benefit the plant-based primary industries and our natural ecosystems.
Rodney Hide completed a BSc in Zoology at the University of Canterbury before heading overseas for his OE. Upon his return to New Zealand in 1983, Rodney commenced a Masters in Resource Management under the Joint Centre for Environmental Sciences at Lincoln University. After completing his Masters Rodney joined the Centre for Resource Management, Lincoln University as a Researcher. In 1987 he was invited to join the Commerce Department at Lincoln as a lecturer in Economics and later won an award from Lincoln for his teaching especially to large classes. In 1990 Rodney took leave and undertook a Masters in Economics at Montana State University, Bozeman. He returned to Lincoln in 1991 and lectured for two years until he left to go into business in Auckland. He was elected MP in 1996. Rodney Hide’s credo is “No politician can spend your money better than you can” and his political ambition is to deliver a flat tax of twenty percent or less.
Saturday Business Seminars
Dr David Simmons is the leader of Lincoln University’s tourism programme and a founding staff member of the Social Science, Tourism and Recreation Group within the Environment, Society and Design Division. He has been at Lincoln University since 1978 and a faculty member since 1980. His research interests are currently focussed on a major FORST funded study of tourism planning in New Zealand communities. The Tourism, Recreation Research and Education Centre (TRREC) which he directs, is involved in a range of research projects including two FORST funded programmes researching the environmental effects of tourism and energy use. David is also active in overseas consulting and in particular, in developing tourist destinations while recent work has been in Cambodia, Nepal and India for WWF. Internationally Davis is a member of the WTO’s (World Touris Organisation’s) Education and Sustainable Tourism Councils. After more than 20 years at Lincoln David still enjoys contributing to numerous under-graduate and post-graduate tourism courses.
Jim Hopkins is famous (or infamous) throughout the far-flung reaches of New Zealand for his work on stage, in television and radio. He has spent the best (or worst) part of 16 years in and around the electronic media - as a scriptwriter on "Close To Home"; presenter of "Fast Forward", "Don't Tell Me", "The Inventors", "Dateline Monday", a performer on The BNZ Festival Debates and radio talkback host on Radio Pacific in Auckland and Radio Avon in Christchurch.
John Buck was awarded Doctor of Commerce (honoris causa) at Lincoln University in 2001 in recognition of his outstanding work in the New Zealand wine industry. He is currently CEO of Te Mata Estate Winery and is a wine consultant for Air New Zealand. John was awarded an OBE in 1995 for services to the wine industry and is a Fellow of the Wine Institute of New Zealand.
