Lincoln University records the death on Sunday of former Master of Halls and Senior Lecturer in Soil Conservation, Brian Douglass. Brian was born in England in 1927 and served on the Lincoln staff from 1962 until the start of 1976 as a Senior Lecturer in Soil Conservation with the Agricultural Engineering Department and, notably, as Master of Halls.
It was in his years as Master of Halls, the administrative head of accommodation facilities and student welfare, that Brian made his mark. He was a highly successful Master of Halls in the days when the majority of the students lived on campus and the Master's position was a senior one in the hierarchy of the then College. Brian's years as Master of Halls spanned the transition from an accommodation regime run on boarding school lines to the more liberal, democratic approach of modem times.
Before coming to Lincoln he worked for the NZ Forest Service and as a soil conservator. He held a science degree from the University of New Zealand and was an MA graduate of Oxford University.
