    Design Intent:

The design intention is to increase people’s connection with the Pūharakekenui/Styx River river mouth and surrounding land. This understanding will increase the connection the people have to the wairua of the site - the land, the water and the sky.

The design will further people’s connection to our changing environment. As our climate changes, we need to be more aware of our ecological markers and take note of our changing place within the environment. The key ecological markers are the birds, the fish and the Maramataka calendar.

The Maramataka calendar is the traditional Māori calendar that was used to record the rising of the moon, the stars and the sun to guide Māori in identifying the best times to go about daily activities.
