A portrait of R. Thaine (1924-25 DipAgr, MSA (Sask), PhD (Melbourne)), the Bledisloe Medallist, 1965. Starting as a farm cadet, completed the agricultural diploma, but was drawn to a career in science, obtaining then his Canadian and Australian degrees. During PhD studies he contracted poliomyelitis and from 1957 was confined to a wheelchair. Despite this hardship he continued his research and aided by his wife, produced scientific papers of high merit in plant physiology, notably aspects of translocation in plants. Worked at Oxford University and then joined staff of the Grasslands Research Institute, Hurley, Surrey, England.
