Moki is the ancestor - the tupuna, of Ngati Moki, Ngai Te Ruahikihiki ki Taumutu. In the late seventeenth century, Moki established his pa on the site where the present Ngati Moki marae, Taumutu, is located near the south-western edge of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Moki was well known for his heroic feats, leadership skill, and for simply taking the initiative when needed, to protect the interests of his people. It is after him that this trophy is named.

In 2008, the Ngati Moki Trophy was gifted by Te Taumutu Runanga to Lincoln University. It is to be awarded each year to a person who has shown considerable leadership and commitment to Maori development and advancement at Lincoln University. The trophy can be awarded to a student, graduate, alumnus, staff member or associate of the University.
