12 September 1983 Overseas visitor at Animal Sciences Group

British veterinarian Mr John Spence will spend three days this week visiting the Animal Sciences Group at Lincoln College, and the Lincoln district.

Mr Spence, from the Pathology Department of the Moredun Research Institute at Edinburgh in Scotland , will talk with
scientists and veterinarians.

On Thursday he will give a seminar at the college on broken mouth in sheep, and will also visit the MAF Animal Health Laboratory near the college.

Mr Spence is a former colleague of Professor Andrew Sykes, Head of the Animal Science Department and chairman of the Animal Sciences Group at the college .

They worked together at Moredun Research Institute on broken mouth in sheep and the effects of parasitism on bone growth.

Professor Sykes said that while Mr Spence was at the college he hoped they would be able to complete a paper on a broken mouth survey they did together in Scotland.

They would also discuss local problems of tooth loss and wear in sheep, and Mr Spence will visit local farms to see the problem at first hand.

Mr Spence is in New Zealand on his way back to the United Kingdom after attending the World Veterinary Congress at Perth in Western Australia.

While in New Zealand Mr Spence has also had talks with Dr Marjorie Orr, of the Invermay Animal Health Laboratory, who is working on tooth abnormalities in sheep in the Southern South Island region.

Mr Spence arrives at the college on Wednesday September 14 and will stay until Friday September 16.
