23 August 1984 Lincoln College graduate wins UK scholarship

Lincoln College biochemistry graduate Darryl Macer has won two United Kingdom awards for study there during the 1984-85 academic year.

He has been awarded the prince of wales Scholarship by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, and the Rutherford Studentship at Trinity College, Cambridge.

Darryl leaves for the Untied Kingdom on Thursday August 30.

He will work on research at the Medical Research Council Laboratory at Cambridge - an internationally prestigious establishment.

Darryl is one of only 14 New Zealanders this year to win an ORS Award, given only to  post-graduate students of outstanding merit and potential.

He spent two years at Lincoln College in 1982 and 1983, after two years at the University of Canterbury, gradating with first-class honours in bio-chemistry.

In his summer vacations during the last four years he has worked on research in the University chemistry department, the microbiology department at Lincoln College, and at a top Australian laboratory.

The Professor of Biochemistry at Lincoln College, Professor Bernard Howard, said Darryl had a distinguished undergraduate career with an impressive academic record.

" He knows where he wants to go, and he set his sights on a high level since leaving school, if not before," professor Howard said.
