CollectionBledisloe Medal RecipientsDescriptionA portrait of P. H. Elworthy (1946-50 DipVFM), the Bledsloe Medallist, 1986. On completion of his CAC course he took up management responsibilities on the family property. Peter was one of the first to farm deer on land regarded by many to be the preserve of intensively farmed sheep and cattle. In 1969 he was appointed to the National Research Advisory Council. He was also a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science. In 1970 he was awarded a Nuffield Travelling Scholarship, which took him to Britain. His contribution to livestock production was recognised by the New Zealand Society of Animal Production in 1978 with the McMeekan Memorial Award. He played a key role in the formation of the New Zealand Deer Farmers Association and was president of it from 1974 to 1981. Peter was knighted in 1987. Later in his career he was a leader in companies responsible for the modernisation of the Port of Timaru and the development of South Canterbury’s Opuha Dam. Among a myriad of other offices held he was Patron of the South Canterbury Conservation Trust and Chair of the Biological Organic Trust at Lincoln University. Sir Peter died in January 2004.PersonP.
