Tribute to life of Professor Langer

The life and work of Lincoln University’s Emeritus Professor of Plant Science, Reinhart Langer was celebrated at his funeral service in Christ’s College Chapel on 15 August. He had been a long-serving Christ’s College Board member.

Professor Langer, Lincoln University’s senior emeritus professor, died in Christchurch on 3 August 2018 aged 97.

A staff member from 1959-1985, he was the father of modern Plant Science teaching and research at Lincoln University. In addition to being Professor and departmental head of Plant Science, he was Vice-Principal for eight years and Acting Principal for over a year. 

The Langer family lived on campus for nine years in what is now known as House 61.

It was a tribute to Professor Langer’s life and service that  his funeral was not only a  poignant family occasion but  drew a significant gathering of those with important Lincoln University associations.

Among them were a former Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, two Emeritus Professors, two current professors, two associate professors, two Bledisloe Medallists, an Alumni International Medallist, an Executive Member of the Alumni Association, four widows of former senior academics, plus numerous other alumni and current and retired staff. Former Senior Lecturer Dr Warwick Scott gave one of the eulogies, as did Plant Science graduate Dr Hanif Quazi. The former Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, David Coles, assisted with the service. Family members present included Professor Langer’s widow, Hilary, and children Tim, Lisa and Simon.
