Featherston and the surrounding South Wairarapa Region is an undervalued resource for the Wairarapa. Situated between the popular weekend attractions of the boutique town of Greytown and the Martinborough Wine Village, there is the opportunity for Featherston to become an integrated part the small town network in the Wairarapa. Featherston sits on the intersection of the Wairarapa Rail Line, State Highway 2 and State Highway 53 making it a vital point for transport connections in the region. For travelers heading north it is the gateway to the Wairarapa coming over the Rimutaka Incline. Featherston is situated near to Lake Wairarapa, the Ruamahunga River and the southern coastline of Palliser Bay, resulting in many recreational activities in proximity.

Vision Statement: Featherston will retain its small rural town character while thriving off its transport connections to Wellington. The main street will become a high use area with easy walkability to medium density housing.

Design Intentions: 
Create central town hub using TOD principles
• relocate train station
• creation of civic spaces
• balance rural and urban through TOD strategies
Retain rural character/genius loci and lifestyle
• reduce urban sprawl by increasing density
• create building facade character
Increase access to recreational opportunities
• cycle and walkway through green network south of town from train station
