Landscape is central to the paintings of J.S. Parker. For over forty years he was based in Blenheim where he interpreted the landscape through abstract compositions concerned with space, colour, light and texture.
These two works illustrate Parker’s journey toward refining his vision of the landscape to its barest formal elements. Lines and shapes representing horizons, fields and rivers.

Parker graduated from Ilam School of Fine Arts in 1966 and moved to Blenheim in 1971 to teach. He worked on his well-known Plain Song series from the 1980s till his death in 2017 – expressing the colour of the Marlborough landscape in musical terms.
