Her early work has been strongly influenced by Japanese prints, in particular, and she’ll often combine Eastern and Western techniques. Here, Forster’s use of flat colours, strong outlines, and a mark resembling an artist signature or seal echoes the style of Ukiyo-e, colourful woodblock prints that were produced in the 17th-19th centuries in Japan. The subject of a woman applying makeup at her dressing table is also looking at Ukiyo-e’s common representations of women as courtesans or Kabuki theatre actors.

This print is one of a series that show traditional female roles in the household and society, and Forster’s titles seem to poke fun at these expectations.Artwork CopyrightAll rights reservedArt CollectionLincoln University Art CollectionKeywordsFigures | tāngataInterior
