He was a notable name in the rising artists circles in Kortrijk and he associated closely with the Jeune Peinture belge, a group important in reviving Belgium’s post-war art scene. At age 25 he won the Belgian Prix de Rome, a prestigious international scholarship for young artists.

His painted works reveal neo-expressionistic qualities with their Kirchner-like angular figures. Later works also take on a Gothic influence with dark, religious themes. As a critical writer, Notebaert often explored the role of the textile designer in an increasingly industrial society. He sought to promote the use of natural textiles to preserve the famed Flemish traditions when plastic and synthetic materials were becoming commonplace.

The design of this tapestry can be seen as paying tribute those historic textile industries of daily, rural life. Eight scenes show flax working, wool working, spinning, weaving, and tailoring. It is a modern mid-century piece yet retains a much older feel through its traditional craftsmanship and subject matter.
