In this painting he pokes fun at American painter Frank Stella. Where Stella’s Black Paintings were minimal, hard-edged and intellectual – Frizzell has created a wobbly-edged, jelly-like interpretation. Stella, and other Modernists like him, were interested in creating an idealistic, pure art that experimented with form and technique for its own sake. Post-modernist artists such as Frizzell rejected these grand ideologies to instead reflect on our often complex and contradictory world.

After training at Ilam School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury (1960-1963) Frizzell worked in advertising for many years; influences which fed into his art career. In 2004 he was awarded an NZOM for service to the arts.
