Living at the time on a small farm outside Waimate, he created a series of semi-abstract figures working the land. Although painted on canvas, the linear style of the work has the spontaneity of a drawing. Trusttum has utilised the ‘transfer-drawing’ technique of Paul Klee where paint covered paper is laid on top of canvas then drawn over creating a ‘frayed-line’ effect. A red line of twine in the bottom left corner marks the direction of the post holes while the elevated viewing perspective foreshortens the lower half of the body.

Trusttum is well known for his large scale, energetic, expressive works on un-stretched canvas. A prolific painter, he has worked full-time as an artist since the late 1960s. Trusttum graduated from the Canterbury School of Art in 1965 where he was taught by Rudi Gopas who he credits as a strong influence on his work.
