Upham, one of only three to receive the Victoria Cross twice, studied at Canterbury Agricultural College in 1928-29 (DipAgr) and again in 1939 (DipVFM); after the war he farmed in North Canterbury. He was a natural leader and clever strategist with a strong sense of duty.

Born in Lincoln, Archibald Nicoll lost a leg from injuries sustained while serving with New Zealand forces at the battle of the Somme in 1916. A fine landscape artist he is also regarded as one of New Zealand’s most important portraitists, completing over 100 commissions in his lifetime. Through careful observation Nicoll has captured Upham’s quiet determination and symbolically depicted the dark clouds of World War II parting with light-filled blue skies breaking through.
