Austen Deans has captured the essence of farming life in the foothills of the Southern Alps. The work has added significance for Lincoln University as the farm depicted was owned by Harry Knight, the first student enrolled at Lincoln College in 1880, later Chairman of the Board of Governors and also the artist’s grandfather. An important early work by Deans, it was completed immediately after art school and before he volunteered for army service in 1939.
Deans studied at Canterbury College School of Art where he was taught by Archibald Nicoll and a contemporary of Bill Sutton; graduating in 1937. During the war he was appointed an assistant war artist serving under Peter McIntyre. He later accepted a scholarship to study at the Sir Jon Cass Technical Institute in London in 1948 and received an OBE in 1995 for services to art.
