Having been saved from near complete demolition, Ivey Hall was set for a refurbishment in the 1980s to become the new University library. An extensive reconstruction operation gutted the interior and left only the north, east, and west facades of the original building intact. Heritage New Zealand accorded the façade a Historic Places Category 1 preservation status.

Artist Colin Wheeler has beautifully captured the building in a transitory moment. Looking from the interior outwards on the north and west sides, the warmth of the red bricks and silhouette of the iconic curved gables contrast richly with the abstracted geometric lines and brilliant light.

Wheeler taught art at Waitaki Boys High School and frequently painted Otago landscapes and architectural scenes.
