This bold work, from her series of severed sheep’s heads, unflinchingly depicts the realities of rural life and is informed by her experience growing up on a farm in New Zealand. The monumental scale of the work forces us to confront our farming heritage, while the piercing black eyes of the decapitated sheep stare coldly at the viewer, adding to the poignancy of the work.

Braithwaite has depicted humanity’s relationship with the natural world since studying at the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Arts in the mid-1980s. She later moved to Sydney in 1999 and completed her Masters at Sydney College of the Arts in 2000. Her works are held in many public and private collections in New Zealand and Australia and in 2019 she was the winner of the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize.
