Landscape is central to the paintings of John Sholton Parker. For more than 40 years, he was based in Blenheim, where he interpreted the landscape through
abstract compositions concerned with space, colour, light and texture. Parker refined his vision of the Marlborough landscape to its barest formal elements – lines and shapes representing horizons, fields and rivers.

Parker worked on his well-known Plain Song series from the 1980s until his death in 2017 – expressing the colour of the landscape in musical terms. The plain song theme is two-fold. It can be read as relating to landscape plains, but also to the ‘plainsong’ chanting of the Middle Ages. Music was integral to Parker’s art. His love of blues, jazz and classical music is evident in the rhythm and balance in his paintings, helping evoke emotions and expressing the spirit of the work.

Parker graduated from the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury, in 1966 and moved to Blenheim in 1971 to teach. He was the recipient of the Frances Hodgkins Fellow residency in Dunedin in 1975, where he met Ralph Hotere and a lifelong friendship developed. In 2002, Parker was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to painting. He has
held numerous exhibitions over his career and his work is held in public and private collections.
