From the 1940s to the 1980s Bill Sutton refined and honed his interpretation of the Canterbury landscape. Sutton’s Plantation Series (1986-88) is the culmination of this progression and symbolises the ever changing nature of our environment. Although he resented the influx of pinus radiata onto the Canterbury Plains, Sutton’s fascination with composition and pattern making took over and he created a series that has become synonymous with the wide expanses of the area.

Sutton studied at the Canterbury College School of Art and graduated in 1937. He later taught there for 30 years and has influenced generations of art students since. He travelled widely and is well known for his extensive watercolours of Italy. Early on in his career Sutton exhibited regularly with Christchurch art association, The Group, and his work will be forever associated with the Canterbury landscape.
