The triptych shows Hammond's passion for music - he was a drummer in a 1960s folk band called Band of Hope Jug Band - in all its chaotic energy and out-of-body inducing experiences.

Born in Christchurch, Hammond studied at the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury (1966-68). He then worked commercially in design and made toys before beginning to exhibit in the 1980s. After a trip to the Auckland Islands in 1989 he embarked on a new series of elongated human/bird creatures, which have come to define his practice.

Bill Hammond is one of New Zealand's most celebrated and known artists - and sadly, he passed away in 2021. His work is hugely sought after and has been extensively exhibited and collected.
