Bill Hammond’s paintings of this period combine lurching and distorted perspectives filled to the brim with seemingly unrelated objects. Hammond is well known for the musical references in his work, in this case the title relates to American hip-hop group Stetsasonic and their 1988 hit of the same name. Two humanoid characters dominate the composition, moving simultaneously to the music.

One of New Zealand’s best known contemporary artists, Hammond studied at the School of Fine Arts, University of Canterbury (1966-68). He then worked commercially in design and made toys before beginning to exhibit in the 1980s. After a trip to the Auckland Islands in 1989 he embarked on a new series of elongated human/bird creatures, which have come to define his practice. Yet, as this work shows, there is more to his repertoire than many may realize.
