Decorations can commemorate historical events or reference people and places. The design featured on this ngatu is called hala paini, or ‘Row of Pines’. Pine trees under a star, the moon, and the sun reference the row of Norfolk pines leading to the Royal Palace. Also featured are the Tongan coat of arms, a lion, and a dove, together symbols of Tongan royalty and European governance.
Once multipurpose everyday items, ngatu today are generally used for special occasions and are a culturally valued gift to exchange. The numbers indicate that it is the middle section of a larger ngatu. The original was cut at some stage, a normal practice, with the other sections likely gifted elsewhere. This ngatu acts as a symbol of thanks from the family of Dallas Price to Lincoln University for being a part of his life journey.
