For a number of years Michel Tuffery explored how this extreme fishing practice decimates ocean life; trapping and killing whales, dolphins and turtles along with targeted fish.
Tuffery is well-known for working in a variety of media and explores issues around colonisation, the environment and identity, drawing on his Samoan, Rarotongan and Tahitian heritage.
Born in Wellington, Tuffery completed a Diploma of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic in 1988. As a child he suffered from dyslexia and expressed himself through drawing. He didn’t read, write or speak until he was six years old – and therefore describes art as literally his first language.
