CreatorSydow, CarlNameUntitledDate Made1974Medium DescriptionLetrafilm and ink on paperObject NumberLU185Dimensionssight 565 mm x 820 mmFurther informationDrawing was an integral part of Carl Sydow’s sculptural practice throughout his career. This example is part of his wider Letraset series, made while living in Leeston.

Created by rubbing a transfer from adhesive sheets onto paper, this method allowed Sydow to capture the effects in his corresponding sculptures. The sculptures themselves, made from sheets of perforated metal and suspended from springs, were encouraged to gently sway and shimmer, creating a moiŕe effect.

Sydow studied at the University of Canterbury, School of Art in 1959, later travelling to London in 1965. It was here he was exposed to a generation of sculptors experimenting with new materials, determined to free sculpture from its gallery pedestal. On his return to New Zealand, Sydow was able to introduce these new methodologies through exhibitions in Wellington and Christchurch. Unfortunately due to his early death, and the nature of the materials, very few of his works have survived.
