DescriptionThe opening and dedication ceremony of the Alexander Memorial Entrance, 6 May 1960.

Professor Alexander had been director from 1909 to 1986, a period which included the troubled times of the First World War and the depression of the 1930's and revolutionary changes, many of them arising from the experimental work and original thought of the College. He was a practical man and he believed in practical work; but he took the stand that the College must be a training school for teachers and those who would be farmers, not just a model farm.

The plan that the life and work at the College over a period of 26 year (1909-86) of the late Professor and Mr R. E. Alexander, should be commemorated in a suitable and lasting form was initiated by Mr Alan Leslie, F.R.C.V.S. Mr Leslie had been veterinarian at the College (1980-36) and subsequently was chief executive officer, New Zealand Veterinary Services Council. The dedication was performed by the Very Rev.
