      Cora-Allan Wickliffe

Cora-Allan Wickliffe is a contemporary practitioner of the Niuean tradition of backcloth known as Hiapo. She is credited with helping to revive this ‘sleeping art form’ which has not been practised in Niue for several generations. Made during lockdown in 2020, the Plant Sampler series offer a simplified version of Hiapo patterns, allowing them to be considered individually as plants used for ceremony, everyday cooking and crafts.
Wickliffe makes her own Hiapo from ata bark (Paper mulberry) and creates traditional dyes or togo from Tuitui (candlenuts) and Mangrove sap harvested in Niue.

In 2020 Wickliffe won the Pacific Heritage Art Award in the Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika Awards, and later this year she will undertake the prestigious McCahon House artist residency. Her work is held in major art collections including Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Wallace Arts Trust.
