This unruly gathering of loud calls to environmental action seems out of place here - inside, on this wall - instead of a boisterous street protest. But that is exactly their point: to disrupt, to challenge the status quo.

This protest is an invitation to think about our collective responsibility and capability to do better for our oceans, our land, our biodiversity, and our own lives. Artist John Reynolds (Aotearoa) is thinking about our place in the South Pacific, among small island nations, with both poetic and challenging statements referencing the urgency for greater public commitment to environmental protection. Created in response to a visit Reynolds made to the Kermadec Islands, these placards speak specifically to the protection of our oceans, but they also remind us of the array of current global protest movements.

Reynolds’ prolific art practice spans four decades and counting. Working on both large scale and intimate paintings, drawings, and installations, he is particularly well-known for his text-based imagery which have found their way into many national art collections.
