The reports of Mr J. R. Charlton, M.R.C.V.S., upon the tuberculin tests carried out at the Agricultural College, Lincoln, were submitted to the College Board yesterday and are published below. The cattle tested, twenty-one in number, were- pedigree shorthorns, all being cows, except one which was a bull. The temperature of each animal -was taken before the test was applied, and afterwards at twelve, fifteen and twenty hours. The mean normal temperature of a cow is about 101.5deg. Fahr., and a reaction of 3deg. at any of the periods mentioned shows the presence of tuberculosis; under 3deg. it is doubtful. As will be seen by the reports below five cows reacted at the first test, but one not sufficiently so to justify the operator in pronouncing her tuberculous. At the second test the five cows reacted, and confirmed the results of the first operation. The cows that are diseased are four years old and upwards, only one, however, being an aged animal.

Mr Charlton reported on May 11th as follows: —" I have the honour to annex my report regarding twenty-one cattle tested by mc with tuberculin at the College farm on April 22nd and 23rd. Tuberculin Kochii, concentrated, from the laboratory of Dr Libberty in Germany, was specially prepared for use by m*-, the quantity about 4 cubic centimetres introduced into each animal representing about 0.4 c.c. of the non-diluted material."

Mr J. R. Charlton wrote to the Board, under date of Auguso 9th, as follows:—"I beg to annex particulars respecting five cattle re-tested with tuberculin at the College farm on July 22nd and 23rd. l am satisfied that, though there are no external manifestations of the disease, four of the animals are affected with tuberculosis, whilst the fifth animal must be regarded as suspicious. Notwithstanding these facts, however, I do not advise the immediate destruction of all or any of the aforesaid cattle, as, taking everything into consideration, it appears to mc that it will be sufficient to have them isolated and carefully examined at frequent intervals up to the period of parturition, after which, as an additional precaution, the milk, if possible, should be sterilised or pasteurised, or subjected to repeated microscopic examination and experiment." The Board decided to make the reports public, and to adopt Mr Charlton's recommendations as to the isolation of the diseased cows and the treatment of their milk.
