Rotational grazing of lucerne

Professor Derrick Moot talks about rotationally grazing a runout lucerne stand on 6 October 2015. At this stage we are about half way though the first six paddock rotational grazing cycle. 
Note: For overseas viewers "runout"refers to a stand/pasture with has deteriorated due to factors such as age/pest/disease/improper management etc. For lucerne when plant population decreases below about 18 plants per square meter the remaining plants are unable to compensate by producing more shoots per plant from the crown - the overall result is a decrease in yield as less productive species invade open spaces in the pasture where lucerne plants have died. This triggers the decision by the farmer/manager to enter a pasture renewal phase. A series of crops and short term pastures/supplementary forages are sown which will the farmer to control problematic weeds before moving back into a permanent pasture. A renewal phase takes 1-2 years depending on the weeds present and the species used. In New Zealand it is generally recommended that about 10% of a farm should be renewed each year.
