Site Description: The Seacliff Lunatic Asylum Grounds, as the name suggests, are located in Seacliff a small coastal settlement located approximately 30 kilo metres north of Dunedin City on New Zealand’s east coast. It is the site of the former Seacliff Lunatic Asylum that was built in 1878 due to the unacceptable high visibility of the Dunedin Asylum in the town centre and the need for its relocation to be a more suitable unseen area. The shameful practices, catastrophic tragedies and the spirits of troubled patients of the Lunatic Asylum have tarnished atmosphere and negative stigma surrounding Seacliff.
