One team was entered in C.H.A.'s 2nd A grade competition (a grade up on last year) and finished third out of 12 teams in the grade. Results: 17 games played; 10 won; 4 lost; 3 drawn. Points for 50; against 25.
In the Annual Tournament with Training College, the team had a 1-0 victory-our first success ever, in this Tournament. Though Winter Tournament results are not the best, the team gave a very good account of itself by holding its own against much more experienced teams. This was well shown in the Canterbury University match which we lost after a tough struggle, 2-1. In the conflict with our old rivals, Massey, we were down 2-1 at one stage but came back with a very determined attack in the second spell to win 4-2.
Of the team players, Dan Bensaude in goal has been outstanding all season. Both backs, Eric Etwell and Ian Burnett, have been very reliable most of the season and provided a very sound defence at Tournament. Tony Taylor at centre-half has been a life-saver on defence and attack, playing good constructive hockey the whole year.
The forwards were ably led by John Troughton (who was a reserve for the N.Z.U. team) who was well backed up by John Butel and Ray Register.
Special thanks must go to our coach, Jack Hope, and to our Staff Member, Mr Hollard, for the way they have assisted us in this most successful season.
