Commemorating 90 years of Lincoln College, this panoramic mural was painted by Ruth Burns, wife of VC Malcom Burns, in the late 1960s. It was designed to tell the story of Lincoln College up to the present day. Burns’ thorough research included re-reading the college history and annual reports – noting important milestones and replicating them visually. She also spent many enjoyable weekends making detailed drawings of the campus and surrounding farms.

As the mural was to hang in the newly completed Hilgendorf Building, Burns felt that a stylized design was needed to suit its modern architecture. She spent considerable time contemplating the subject matter, composition and colour of the final mural. Once begun, the painting became an all-consuming undertaking and took several months. Domestic duties took a back seat and on more than one occasion the VC returned home in the evening and needed to make dinner for them both! In July 1969 the mural was finally unveiled, and remains an enduring and important record of the history of Lincoln University.
