Knowing there was a food depot 8km away they built a coracle from tree branches and canvas salvaged from the shipwreck. After their initial attempt failed they built a second coracle and made it to Port Ross on Auckland Island where they were rescued by a passing steamer four weeks later.

Denise Copland explores her interest in the balance and tension between nature, humanity and culture in this work. She depicts the coracle, the uncompromising landscape and includes text from Herbert Escott-Inman’s account of the saga - The Castaways of Disappointment Island (1911). Copland is regarded as one of New Zealand’s foremost printmakers, she taught for many years and has work in the collections of major galleries in New Zealand and Australia.
