Lincoln University has transmuted the traditional use of the mauri stone, although the essence of its use is the same. After ceremonial presentation and the singing of the waiata, Te Punga is given a place of prominence on the stage at each year's Graduation ceremony. Most of the stone is rough, but one side is highly polished. The rough side faces towards the students as they approach the recipet of their award, while the smooth side follows as they make their way off the stage as graduands. This represents the way in which the graduates have been enhanced by their time at Lincoln, departing with additional mana.
