Mark came to Lincoln University in the 1970s to study for a Parks and Recreation qualification to be a Park Ranger. Drawn to the Mount Cook area while doing his practical
work there and "never left" until his career there as a Search and Rescue Mountaineer was curtailed with the loss of both legs to frostbite in 1982. He returned to Lincoln University in the mid-11980s and studied biochemistry, graduating BSc {Hons) in 1989. Went into medical research at the Christchurch School of Medicine and Christchurch Hospital. In 1992 switched careers and joined Montana as a winemaker. Became Montana's Senior Winemaker for the South Island. Won a Silver Medal for cycling at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney. Climbed Mount Everest in 2006, the first double amputee to reach the summit. Established Limbs4All Trust to assist disabled people and has provided support for the Spinal Injuries Rehabilitation Centre in Kathmandu and the Cambodia Trust School of Prosthetics. Appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, 2003.
