Lincoln University records with sadness the passing this week (w/o 17 April 2008) of Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry, Bernard Hugh Howard.
Bernard was the foundation Professor of Biochemistry at Lincoln University and his appointment in 1964 finalised the establishment of a Department of Biochemistry here.
His research on rumen-inhabiting micro-organisms was internationally known and he achieved early prominence for work on the extraction of insulin, needed in the treatment of human diabetes, from the pancreas glands of a sheep.
Born in Manchester in 1920, Professor Howard retired from Lincoln University in 1985.
