Lonnie Hutchinson is a leading Aotearoa artist known for her signature intricate cut-out designs across a variety of materials, from builder’s paper to steel. Working mostly in monochrome, this print is a rare, fierce pop of colour in Hutchinson’s oeuvre.

Trick or Treat speaks to indigenous experiences in the Pacific, in particular the historic and contemporary issues of slave labour and sex slavery enforced upon local communities after colonisation. The erasure of Polynesian female power and identity through sexual exploitation is captured in Hutchinson’s considered choice of red to represent blood and whakapapa and the inclusion of a naked female figure (protagonist ‘Black Pearl’), while the swirling, golden kumara vines contrast with that experience. The vines reclaim a feminist narrative by paying homage to their traditional arts and crafts and celebrating the passing on of information - gossip on the ‘grapevine’.
