Waimarie references kā puna Waimarie (the bountiful lakes), one of the three kinds of springs dug by Rākaihautū on his journey through Te Waipounamu, the South Island. Here, Waimarie reflects the abundance of investigation, research, and knowledge about our whenua.

These laser-cut panels respond to kā puna karikari a Rākaihautū with matauranga (Māori knowledge) by melding this narrative with imagery of rongoā (medicinal) plants like kawakawa, of pātiki (flounder), and of the practice of cultivating and weaving with harakeke.

Lonnie Hutchinson is a leading New Zealand artist known for her signature intricate cut-out designs across a variety of materials, from paper to steel. Her works typically employ pattern, play with light and shadow, and speak to place and time through ancestral connections or cultural issues.
