Cliff Collister was a long-serving staff member in the Centre for Computing & Biometrics (CCB) at Lincoln. The sundial was an existing feature of the Lincoln campus; for many years it was located in the formal garden on the present location of the Commerce Building. When that site was cleared in 1990, prior to the construction of the Commerce Building, the sundial was dismantled and put in storage in the LincWorks area. Lionel Hussey, a fellow CCB staff member who had a keen interest in astronomy, proposed the idea of reconstructing the sundial in a prominent location as a memorial to Cliff. This proposal was brought to fruition and the sundial was placed in its present location on the Ivey Hall terrace. A dedication ceremony was held by the sundial in August 2000.
