Bill Brandenburg: Steward of the Brandenburg Coppice

Overview

Bill Brandenburg played a pivotal role in developing the Brandenburg Coppice at Lincoln College (now Lincoln University). Through his practical research, hands-on management, and accessible publications, he introduced traditional coppicing techniques to a New Zealand context. His work created a lasting educational, ecological, and cultural asset on campus.

Early Interest in Sustainable Woodlands

Bill arrived at Lincoln with a strong interest in alternative forestry systems. While conventional forestry dominated New Zealand at the time, Bill was drawn to centuries-old European coppicing traditions—methods based on regeneration, repeated harvesting, and long-term land stewardship.

He saw potential for these approaches to be adapted to Canterbury’s climate and to serve as a teaching resource for the university.

Establishing the Brandenburg Coppice

In the late 1980s, Bill began planning and planting the Brandenburg Coppice. The site was designed as a working example of multi-purpose woodland management, integrating:
