    Cecil Leys

    DescriptionA portrait of the late Sir Cecil Leys. Sir Cecil Leys, chairman of directors of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., died on June 23rd in Mackay, Queensland, after a brief illness. He was aged 73. Long associated with the Auckland 'Star', Sir Cecil Leys was knighted in 1931 in recognition of his services to journalism in New Zealand. A son of the late Dr T. W. Leys, for many years editor of the Auckland 'Star' and a notable figure in the cultural life of Auckland, Sir Cecil Leys was born in 1877. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School and the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln (1892-93), where he won diplomas. Sir Cecil Leys married Miss Hilary Vaile in 1921, a daughter of Mr P. A. Vaile, and Auckland lawyer. Lady Leys died in 1944. Sir Cecil Leys is survived by a son, Mr T. H. Leys, who was the managing director of N.Z.
