6 August 1998 Enjoy a lunchtime of jazz standards and classics

Jazz comes to the Lincoln University campus in the latest Lincoln University Music Society lunchtime concert on Wednesday 12 August.

Presenting timeless delights from George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein will be Christchurch jazz singer Andrea Millward with the city's well-known Doug Caldwell Trio.

"The opportunity is not often presented to hear jazz recitals on the Lincoln campus," says Music Society convenor Professor Andrew Sykes, "and we're particularly pleased to have with us for this concert such a respected figure in the New Zealand music industry as Doug Caldwell.

"We're equally excited that one of Lincoln's own staff members, Student Liaison Co-ordinator Andrea Millward, is the featured vocalist for this concert.

"We hope members of the local communities around the University will come along and join staff and students at this free concert in Memorial Hall. They're most welcome. It starts at 12.40pm."

Jazz pianist, composer and arranger, Doug Caldwell has more than 50 years' experience in the New Zealand music industry. He has performed with such notable musicians as Henry Mancini, Ronnie Scott and Mavis Rivers and in 1993 was awarded a Vocational Excellence Prize by Rotary International for services to music. He was musical director of Radio NZ and TVNZ from 1958-81 and taught music at Christchurch Boys High School for many years.

Andrea Millward, a graduate of Massey and Canterbury universities and a Lincoln staff member since mid-1997, has performed at jazz venues and festivals around the South Island for the past five years. Recent engagements have included the Christchurch Festival of Romance, Christchurch Arts Festival and Queenstown Jazz Festival. Millward and Caldwell have performed together regularly for the past two years and are currently working on a CD recording of songs by American composers Jimmy van Heusen and Harry Warren.

Making up the trio for the Lincoln concert are bass player Vince Clark who has worked regularly with Doug Caldwell over the years and guitarist Bob Heinz who is a guitar tutor at Christchurch Polytechnic's Jazz School.
