Mary Hodge McCallum

Remembered generally as Molly Scott, Mrs McCallum, wife of D. W. McCallum (47-48), Instructor in Horticulture, Department of Agriculture, Blenheim, died on March 25, 1959, at the age of 37. They had been students together in the early years of the Horticulture course (1947-48), both attaining the Diploma in Horticulture. Molly Scott came to the College as one of the first women students to embark on a full-time diploma course. She was born at Riwaka, Nelson, in 1921, daughter of a well-known orchardist, and sister of Alan E. Scott, who preceded her at Lincoln when he took the Diploma in Agriculture course (1945-46). She is well remembered for her grace and charm and if the lot of women students had been difficult in her time, she looked back with affection on all with whom she was associated, both students and staff. She and David McCallum were married in December, 1949, and had two children Clare, now 5 years, and Peter, now 2 years old. Despite the onset of illness she found time and spirit to be active in church and repertory work in Blenheim, as well as being a fine wife and mother. The sympathy of all who remember Molly Scott will be extended to her husband and small children, who continue to live in Blenheim (1959 Canterbury Agricultural College Magazine, p93).
