DescriptionThe digital revolution has been transformative and disruptive of established norms of knowledge creation. At times it overwhelms us with the deluge of data and information that is now so readily accessible on the web. On the other hand, the democratising power of the digital revolution has seen a new creativity emerge, which now places the individual citizen at the centre of the creation of new content and of ideas generation.

The extraordinary volume of data and information produced on the web as a response to the Canterbury earthquakes is a living example of how immediate and responsive the digital world can be. We have seen images that have astounded us, stories that have inspired us or broken our hearts and we have engaged with hard data and research from which we draw to make critical decisions for our future. The question is what will happen to this unique and irreplaceable documentary record of such an important chapter in NZ’s history? Now that it is digital, will it still be accessible in 100 years time?

What are the opportunities and challenges that New Zealand faces to maximise the opportunities presented by the digital revolution? Closer to home, how can Lincoln University become an influential player in harnessing the potential of the digital paradigm?
